COVID19 Level 3 – What does this mean for businesses?

April 26, 2020

On Monday 27th April at 11.59pm New Zealand will transition from alert level 4 to alert level 3. Find out what this means for your business.

What type of businesses can open at level 3?

At alert level 3, most businesses will be able to open, if they can meet strict Government guidelines. Under level 3, employees must work from home where available. If this is option is unavailable for a business, then they must adhere to the following health and safety guidelines:

  • Regular disinfecting of surfaces.

  • Encouraging good hand hygiene by allowing frequent hand washing and sanitising.

  • Not having sick people in the workplace.

  • Meeting physical distancing requirements.

  • Recording who is interacting with each other

Any business that relies on physical interactions between employees and customers will not be allowed to open, i.e hairdressers, barbers, gyms. Retail and hospitality businesses can open for contactless business interactions, such as click-and-collect and delivery.

Can I travel for business purposes?

At Alert Level 3, you can travel within your district or neighbouring districts for business purposes, however it is recommended that you only travel within your current district. Essential workers will be able to travel outside of their districts within the region to perform services when needed.

How can you protect your workforce?

It is expected that all businesses will abide by the health and safety guidelines mentioned, as well as make remote work available where possible. Business may look at the following ideas to provide a safe working environment:

  • Screens or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Gloves and masks

  • Staggering start times and meal breaks

  • Distancing between work desks
